How To Fix Your Ipad When It Glitches

iOS 10 problems continue to plague many iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users as we push deeper into 2018. If you run into an iOS 10 issue on your device try a fix from this list before taking your device down to your local Apple Store.

Apple's iOS 10 operating system is stable for many users, but problems are frustrating iOS 10.3.2 and iOS 10.3.3 users and those on older versions of iOS 10. This shouldn't come as much of a surprise.

iOS updates, even updates that go through Apple's beta process, are always riddled with problems. Problems with apps, services, and performance are extremely common.

Apple won't release any more iOS 10 updates which means those of you with an older iPhone, iPad, or iPod model are on your own.

If your device is compatible with iOS 11, you can try upgrading to Apple's current operating system. Devices that are compatible with iOS 11 are also compatible with iOS 12. Apple's iOS 12 update comes with various performance improvements.

If you're stuck on iOS 10 or you simply don't want to upgrade at this time, this guide will show you how to fix most common iOS 10 problems. If you're noticing extreme battery drain, an issue with Bluetooth, or abnormal lag, take a look at our list before you schedule an appointment with an Apple Genius.

How to Fix iOS 10 Installation Problems

Installation problems plague every single iOS update.

The most common installation issue is one where the download/installation process gets stuck/frozen. A number of prospective iOS 10 users already encountered this problem and we expect the issue to be a problem throughout the iOS 10 update's lifespan.

Fortunately, there's a very simple fix that should jumpstart the installation process on your iPhone, iPad and/or iPod touch.

If your iOS 10 download gets stuck, hold down the home button and the power button (volume down and power button on the iPhone 7/iPhone 7 Plus) at the same time to perform a reset. Your device should power down automatically within 10 seconds.

It will then turn itself back on and you should be able to get through the iOS 10 download/installation process.

How to Fix iOS 10 Bluetooth Problems

Bluetooth problems are among the most common iOS issues and we've already seen a ton of complaints about iOS 10 Bluetooth issues.

Bluetooth is not stable!!!

iOS 10 users are reporting broken Bluetooth connections with speakers, headsets, and Bluetooth audio in the car. These problems can be a bit tricky to fix but we do have some remedies that should dislodge the issue(s), at least temporarily.

First, try forgetting your Bluetooth connection. To forget a Bluetooth connection on your device go to Settings > Bluetooth > Select your connection using the circular blue i tab > Tap Forget this Device. After this is complete, try reconnecting.

If you still can't connect, it's time to take more drastic measures. First, try resetting your device's network settings. To do that, go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. It will take a few seconds to complete and your device will forget known Bluetooth devices. Reconnect and try again.

If it's still busted, reset all of your settings. This has worked for us and others in the past and it's worth a shot if nothing is working.

To do this go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings. This will take a few minutes to complete and after it's done your device's settings will be restored to factory defaults. Make sure you have Wi-Fi passwords handy because your device will forget them.

If these steps fail you, consult the manual for your Bluetooth device, and if you need to, the manual for your car.

If you're having issues with Bluetooth in your car and you can't find a manual fix, you might need to bring it into a dealer/specialist to see if they can diagnose the problem. You might need to do more than forget Bluetooth networks.

How to Fix iOS 10 Battery Life Problems

Surprise, surprise. Some iOS 10 owners are running into battery life problems after installing the latest update. Battery life problems are among the most common iOS problems and they will plague iOS 10 users for months to come.

If you're seeing iOS 10 battery life issues and you just downloaded iOS 10, wait a few days before doing anything major. It sometimes takes a couple of days for new updates to settle in.

If for some reason you notice abnormal battery drain on your iPhone or iPad after two days or so, it's time to take action.

We've put together a list of fixes for common iOS 10 battery life problems. These fixes have worked for us and many others and they're worth a look if you want to fix the problem from your computer chair rather than at an Apple Store.

How to Fix iOS 10 Wi-Fi Problems

iOS 10 users are running into an assortment of problems with Wi-Fi. Here's how you can try and fix broken Wi-Fi on iOS 10.

@Apple @AppleSupport please sort this poor wifi issue that is widely reported with iOS 10.3.2 iPhone 6s+ & iPads = bin

— Nikki Douthwaite (@scarynix) July 12, 2017

Before you start fiddling with iOS 10 and your settings, we recommend looking into your router/modem situation.

If you suddenly run into problems on a known network, try unplugging the router for a solid minute before plugging it back in.

You might also check to see if there is a firmware update though many routers will install updates automatically. Each router is different so you'll need to consult your manual on how to do this.

If you can't access the router or you're positive it has nothing to do with it, it's time to dig into iOS 10 on your device.

Verizon-WiFi-Calling-iOS-9.31

If you run into Wi-Fi problems on iOS 10 you'll first want to forget the network causing you problems and try reconnecting to it. Go into your Settings > Wi-Fi > Select your connection > Tap Forget this Network at the top of the screen. Reconnect if you can and check speeds.

If this fails, it's time to reset your network settings. To do this, head into Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

It should only take a few seconds to complete though you'll lose your known passwords. Make sure you have your Wi-Fi passwords handy before you do this.

If none of these fixes work for you, you can head here for some other potential fixes. Apple's also got its own guide to Wi-Fi problems available so make sure to look there too.

How to Fix iOS 10 Touch ID Problems

If your Touch ID starts acting up after installing the iOS 10 update, don't panic. Touch ID issues are extremely common and there are potential fixes for fingerprints not reading and issues with Touch ID in the App Store.

Since updating to iOS 10.3.3, TouchID doesn't recognize my fingerprints. :(

— Eric Shepherd (@sheppy) July 19, 2017

If your Touch ID suddenly stops working with iOS 10, the first thing to do is re-train your fingerprints. Make sure dirt and sweat are removed from the Touch ID sensor and that oil is removed from your hands. You want a nice clean print.

After that's done go to Settings > Touch ID & Passcode > Enter your Passcode. On the next screen swipe from right to left on each fingerprint to delete them. When this is complete you can tap on Add a Fingerprint… to re-train your Touch ID.

iPhone-6s-Plus-Touch-ID

If your iOS 10 Touch ID problems pertain to the App Store, here's a possible fix. First go to Settings > Touch ID & Passcode > Enter your Passcode.

After that, turn off iTunes & App Store. Reboot your iPhone or iPad. Go back to Touch ID & Passcode in Settings and turn iTunes & App Store back on. This has fixed Touch ID issues for us, and others in the past.

If Touch ID stops working altogether, you can try resetting the phone by holding down the home button and the power button (volume down and power button on an iPhone 7/iPhone 7 Plus) for 10 seconds or until the phone restarts.

If that quick fix fails, you might want to try a factory reset. The instructions can be found at the bottom of this page. It's a long process but its a known fix for major Touch ID problems.

How to Fix iOS 10 Cellular Data Problems

iOS 10 users are already complaining about cellular data problems and we expect complaints to pick up (as they always do) in the weeks ahead.

These, like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth issues, can be difficult to nail down and fix but there are a few remedies to try if you start experiencing trouble.

@TMobile What's up with this iOS 10.3 update affecting out cellular service…I thought this was fixed last year!?!

— Jessie Ray (@MrJeyRey) March 29, 2017

First, you'll want to make sure your service provider isn't experiencing an outage. Outages are common and you'll want to check social media and your carrier's website for details.

If you're positive it's not an outage, try restarting your device. Power it down and then power it back on to see if that helps.

iOS-10-vs-iOS-9-Walkthrough-7

If it doesn't flip on Airplane Mode for 30 seconds before turning it off. Airplane Mode kills all connections on your device and this quick fix has settled cellular data issues for some users in the past.

We also recommend toggling off Cellular Data and/or LTE to see if that helps alleviate your problem. To shut LTE down temporarily, go into Settings > Cellular > Enable LTE > Off. Turn it back on when/if you need it.

To shut off Cellular Data completely without turning off any other services go to Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data > Toggle Off. Toggle it back on a 30 seconds later to see if things have improved.

How to Fix iOS 10 Touchscreen Problems

If your device's screen stops responding with iOS 10 on board, you don't need to head to an Apple Store. Yet.

Is it too early to start conspiracy theories about iOS 10.3? I swear my iPad is slower and the touch screen is playing up :-/

— Lt Cmdr Timmy (@homebrandcola) March 29, 2017

Touchscreen issues are common and they can pop up at any time. If you start experiencing issues with iOS 10 and your device, take these steps.

If your iPhone/iPad's screen stops responding to touches and swipes, you'll want to hold down the power button and home button (volume down and power button on an iPhone 7/iPhone 7 Plus) at the same time. Your phone will reboot in a few seconds and the problems should be gone.

If it doesn't work the first time, try it again until it works. In the past, its taken three hard reboots for touchscreen lag issues to disappear on our devices.

How to Fix iOS 10 App Problems

iOS 10 and some apps aren't getting along. In some cases, developers are telling iPhone and iPad users to avoid the update completely until fixes can be found. Others have already rolled out support updates for Apple's new software.

@wheniwork your app keeps freezing on iOS 10.3.3 are you working towards a fix?

— David (@Dahv33d_) July 21, 2017

If you're running into a problem with a third-party application, you'll want to check to see if there is an iOS 10 support update lurking on the App Store.

There's a good chance the developer's issued an update that comes with iOS 10 features and fixes. Just make sure you read reviews from iOS 10 users before you install.

If you're on the latest version and you're running into issues you can't fix, try reinstalling the application. Make sure all of your data is backed up before you do this.

If that doesn't work, you'll need to contact the developer and report the issue so that it can fix the problem in a future update.

iOS-10-music

If your problem is with an app download from the App Store, try restarting your device. If you're connected to the internet and your app isn't downloading, hold down the power button and home button (volume down and power button on an iPhone 7/iPhone 7 Plus) and restart your phone or tablet.

If the download is still stuck, rapidly tap "Update" on an app before the "Open" symbol appears. It might take 10 times or more for the download to get unstuck so you'll need to be patient.

How to Improve iOS 10 Performance

If you are dealing with iOS 10 performance issues like lag, you'll want to consult our list of tips to improve the fluidity of iOS.

If you're experiencing stuttering when switching applications, try adjusting the click speed of the home button. To do that, head into Settings > General > Accessibility > Home Button.

@AppleSupport i'm experiencing serious animation lag all over my phone menu and list, what can i do?? iOS 10.2

— Saeid (@s4e1d) January 4, 2017

These can be difficult to fix, particularly on older devices like the iPhone 5, and you might just have to bite the bullet and perform a factory reset.

If you're dealing with unexpected shutdown issues on your iPhone 6s, you might be able to get a replacement from Apple. To determine if you're eligible for a replacement, check Apple's guide to see if you're eligible.

We've also put together a list of tips to improve iOS 10 performance so take a look at those before you factory reset your device or take it into Apple.

How to Fix iOS 10 iMessage Problems

The iOS 10 update brings new features to the Messages app though many of the iOS 10 Messages problems we're seeing are old and extremely common.

Oh cool, upgraded to iOS 10.3 and now i can't log into iMessage server, fun

— sam (@shlincoln) March 29, 2017

If Messages starts acting up in any way, we recommend shutting it off for a minute and turning it back on. Go into Settings > Messages > Toggle iMessage off then back on.

If you're still having issues sending or receiving messages, restart your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch to see if that helps.

If it doesn't, head into your settings and reset Network Settings. Head into Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Have your Wi-Fi passwords handy because this will cause your device to forget them.

How to Fix iOS 10 Hey Siri Problems

If the "Hey Siri" feature stops working properly after you upgrade to the latest version of iOS 10 there are a few potential workarounds to try before contacting Apple support.

Hey @AppleSupport having trouble with Hey Siri since WatchOS 3iOS/10 on Stainless steel original and Nike + Apple Watch. South African Siri.

— Midnight Swami (@nic_morris) December 22, 2016

The first thing to do is to ensure that Hey Siri is turned on. To do that, head into Settings > Siri and make sure everything looks good.

If that doesn't work, we've had luck turning Siri off, restarting our device, and then toggling Siri back on once the device reboots.

If that doesn't help, try resetting all of your Settings. Head to Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings.

How to Fix iOS 10 Sound Problems

If you start noticing issues with sound (distortion, fuzziness, lack of sound, etc) here are a few things to try.

First, try a simple restart. Power down your iPhone or iPad and turn it back on to see if that helps. This has worked for us in the past.

We also recommend taking a peek at your speaker grille to make sure there isn't any debris buildup causing the issue. If you notice something, carefully remove it and see if that improves your sound.

If none of that helps, try toggling Bluetooth off and on. If you're experiencing the issue in a specific app, try downloading the latest update.

How to Fix iOS 10 PC or Mac Connection Issues

If you're unable to connect your iOS 10-powered device to a Mac or PC running iTunes, don't panic. There are a few known remedies for this problem.

First, make sure you're running the latest version of iTunes. To do that, while in iTunes select the iTunes tab in the upper left corner and click About iTunes. The current version is 12.5.5. If you aren't on that, download the latest update via the iTunes tab > Check for update.

If you are using a Mac, you must be running OS X 10.9.5 or later to support iTunes and iOS 10-powered devices.

If you are using a Windows PC and a firewall, take a look at this guide from Apple. The firewall might be blocking your sync.

How to Fix iOS 10 Raise to Wake Problems

iOS 10's Raise to Wake feature is reportedly causing problems for some iPhone users. If you're noticing issues with this popular function, here are a few potential remedies to try.

First, try toggling it off then on again. To do this, head into Settings > Display & Brightness and toggle Raise to Wake off. Turn it on again to see if that helps.

If that doesn't help, restart your device.

How to Fix iOS 10 Landscape Issues

If your iPhone or iPad gets stuck in landscape mode, here's how to get it unstuck.

First, try locking and unlocking your device. Hit the power button and then unlock your phone with your PIN or fingerprint to see if that helps.

If that doesn't help, try restarting your iPhone or iPad. This will typically dislodge the problem.

If that doesn't work you can try turning off Reduce Motion. To do that go to Settings > General > Accessibility and toggle Reduce Motion off.

How to Fix iOS 10 Random Reboots

If your phone or tablet starts randomly rebooting itself (it goes black for a second and then comes back, it goes black and you see the Apple logo, etc) here are a few potential fixes to try.

First, restart your phone. You can power it down via the power button or you might try holding down the power button and home button. If you're using an iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus hold down the volume down and power button.

If you're still noticing random reboot issues, update your applications. If that doesn't help you should download the latest version of iOS to see if that irons out your issues.

How to Fix iOS 10 Problems If Nothing Else Works

If your iOS 10 problem isn't listed here or these fixes don't help, there are a few other solutions we recommend.

If you want to continue to try and diagnose the problem from your chair, head to Apple's discussion forums and ask for help. Just make sure you do it in the right place. If you're unable to find a fix there, it's time to take a more drastic approach.

You can try downgrading to a previous version of iOS to see if that improves performance. There's no guarantee that it will but there's also no guarantee that it won't.

If you're fed up and still don't want to move from your chair, you can do a factory reset or restore from a backup.

A factory reset will wipe everything on your phone or tablet and return it back to the way it was when you first bought the device so you'll need to make sure anything and everything you care about (photos, videos, etc) is backed up properly.

To perform a full on factory reset on iPhone or iPad go to Settings > General > Reset > Erase All Content and Settings. Again, this should only be used as a last resort.

If you're fine with leaving the house, we recommend taking your device into your local Apple Store. Schedule an appointment at the Genius Bar and see if the geniuses there can diagnose your iOS 10 problem.

If you'd rather get in touch with Apple online try pinging Apple Support via its Twitter account. You can also find Apple support on the company's website.

4 Reasons Not to Install iOS 12.5.5 & 10 Reasons You Should

Install iOS 12.5.5 for Better Security

Install iOS 12.5.5 for Better Security

If you're on the fence, here's one of the best reasons to install iOS 12.5.5 right away.

The iOS 12.5.5 update brings three security patches to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. You can learn more about the trio on Apple's security site.

If you missed iOS 12.5.4, you'll get that update's important security upgrades with your iOS 12.5.5 update. If you're interested in the particulars, head on over to Apple's website for more.

If you skipped iOS 12.5.3, you'll get its security patches with your upgrade. Both of its patches were related to WebKit. If you want to learn more about them, head on over to Apple's security site.

If you skipped iOS 12.5.2, you'll also get its security patch with your upgrade. You can read more about it over on Apple's website.

If you also skipped iOS 12.5, you'll also get its patch with your upgrade. Apple's outlined the update's patch in detail on its security site.

If you missed iOS 12.4.9, you'll also get its four security patches with your upgrade. You can read more about those right here.

If you skipped iOS 12.4.7, you also get the update's three security patches (two for the Mail app and one for Wi-Fi) with your upgrade to iOS 12.5.5.

If you're running software that's older than Apple's iOS 12.4.4 update, you'll want to download iOS 12.5.5 in the near future because it brings iOS 12.4.4's security patch to your device. You can read about it right here.

If you're running software older than iOS 12.4.2, you'll get an its patch with your upgrade. You can read about the security contents of iOS 12.4.2 right here.

If you're on software that's older than iOS 12.4.1, you'll get iOS 12.4.1's security patch with your iOS 12.5.5 update. You can read about that patch right here.

If you're on software that's older than iOS 12.4, you get iOS 12.4's patches with your iOS 12.5.5 update.

If you're running software older than iOS 12.3, your iOS 12.5.5 update carries iOS 12.3's security patches on board. The iOS 12.3 update brought 23 patches and you can read about all of them right here on Apple's site.

If you're on software that's older than iOS 12.2, you'll get iOS 12.2's security patches with your version of iOS 12.5.5.

iOS 12.2 brought a whopping 41 security patches to iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. You can read more about the iOS 12.2's patches over on the company's website.

It's important to note that Apple's iOS 12.2 update patched up an exploit that allowed websites to use motion sensors to "fingerprint" devices.

The exploit, discovered by researchers in Europe, uses JavaScript to snag data from a device's accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer when the user visits an infected website. If the attack is successful, a device can be tracked around the internet.

Fortunately, Apple's patched up the issue. If you skipped it, you'll probably want to move to iOS 12.5.5 soon.

If you're on software older than iOS 12.1.4, you get four important security patches including fixes for a widespread FaceTime eavesdropping bug that lets you call someone via FaceTime and hear the audio coming from their phone before they pick up the phone.

If you're on software older than iOS 12.1.3, you get some additional patches with your version of iOS 12.5.5. Again, they're baked into your upgrade.

Apple lists a grand total of 23 patches on board iOS 12.1.3 and you can read about all of them over on Apple's website.

If you're on software older than iOS 12.1.1, you should install the iOS 12.5.5 update on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch today.

The iOS 12.1.1 update brought 17 patches for potential security exploits. They'll will help protect your phone. You can read about them here.

If you're running software older than iOS 12.1, you'll get 24 patches from that update with your version of iOS 12.5.5.

If you're on software that's older than iOS 12.0.1, your iOS 12.5.5 update brings two additional patches. Both patches are for potential lock screen exploits.

Long story long, if you store sensitive data on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you have some really good reasons to upgrade to iOS 12.5.5 today.
